For the upcoming weeks in writing we are going to journal our adventures as Pilgrims making our way to the new land. We read many books that have children perspectives of the journey and talk about how difficult it was to venture to new land. We will eat "hard tack" (dry bread) and salted meats (jerky) and travel through storms, be crammed together in a boat! It will be great fun wearing our bonnets and hats using our quills (pencils with feathers :) Stay tuned to our weekly adventures and journal writing! I'll include some excerpts here! This will cross into our content area of Social Studies and we will have discussions, use pictures, and compare our lives now (present) to those pilgrims of the past (past and present).

This week we were going to add more reading strategies to our list but as I was reading and working with your children, I thought it would be best to keep working on getting our mouth ready and looking to see if it was right. We worked on sounding out parts of words we knew (words within words, blends, diagraphs or things we know say a specific sound), rather than sounding each and every letter out. This is a great strategy to work on at home when you are reading with your children. We read some great books to help us (Mo Willems-because they are fun and the kids can read most of the words, Frog and Toad and Pete the Cat Saves Christmas (yes it's a little early but he's great!). Keep practicing those reading strategies at home and the nightly reading! I can see so much improvement in their reading already! I have noticed a change in their attitudes, stamina and a real excitement for it! Next week, I will use the minutes from your child's reading log to log it into the Pizza Hut Book It Program. If they reach their goal, they'll get a coupon for a personal pan pizza! I am sending one coupon home on Friday for their October reading!! If you can believe it, they read 7,000 min in here during the month!!!!!! I am sooo proud of them! Make sure to let your child know how proud of them you are too! Thanks for all your continued help and support with reading at home!
Next week we are going to talk about citizenship and voting. They build the foundation for understanding principles of government and their roles as citizens as first graders. We will read Duck for President, Grace for President and Teacher for President. We will talk about what our rights are as citizens and hold an election for these 3 people! They will make campaign signs and then get a chance to vote! It should be a lot of fun as well as a real life application to the standards! |
