Today we did some GREAT math using lots of tools (number line, dice and cubes) to help us create number sentences that were equal to one another. We've spent the week working on counting on and understanding the equals sign.

Reading workshop allows for some great reading and reading activities! During reading workshop today, we had kids listening to reading, reading to someone, reading to self, working on digraph puzzles AND I was also meeting and reading with a small group!
Today we took some data on a very important question: Do you think spiders are cool or creepy? They recorded their data using tally marks and then colored in a pie graph! Something BRAND NEW and they did such a great job! For the most part, we thought spiders were cool! (not Miss Law)
We have started our word study groups this week. As I mentioned during our conference time, I am using your child's DSI (developmental spelling inventory) to have them work in small groups with activities and learning differentiated and centered around what spelling pattern your child is working on.
As you can see in the pictures, they are working together (collaborating) and all focused on their pattern.
Simultaneously we are working on reading strategies and in small groups retelling stories. Our retellings are ranging from oral, to pictures with labels to writing out retelling. We talked about using our book to help us retell the story by making sure we include character names, setting (where does it take place) and a few details to help explain what happened. Some parts are not important to retell so we are working on understanding which pieces are and are not.
Today we talked about the meaning of the equal sign, beyond just it provides a place to put an answer. We compared it to a scale, what's on one side must equal what's on the other. This video is a great tool if you want to work on this at home, or see where our thinking is. We also did an opener called "agree or disagree" with the equal sign and had conversations around their thinking. |
