Instead of taking apart their writing by having them fix conventions, I've decided to give them sentences that are separate from their thoughts. I have been pulling small groups, talking about the sentences and how the convention piece helps with their organization AND to read their own stories.
Sometimes they have trouble reading their own writing, so we talked about how those spaces, periods and lower case letters are going to help them be able to share those wonderful stories they wrote!

I have LOVED reading about small moments these last few weeks. The class has enjoyed sharing and reading some great books that go along with our small moments:
Bintou's Braids The Snowy Day Every Friday Big Sister, Little Sister How to Babysit a Grandpa Do Like Kayla Alexander and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day The Night of the Veggie Monster Now that we have an understanding of what a small moment is, how to plan out our thoughts, it is time to move on to the conventions of writing. We talked today about just 4 small things that we need to remember: 1. Capitals at the start of a sentence. 2. Space 3. Periods at the end of our thoughts. 4. Writing in lower case letters Today I worked with some children one on one and in small groups to reread our writing, which sometimes is a telltale sign that we may have missed some of the above conventions. We didn't harp on spelling, but focusing on the format. Today we reviewed what we thought we knew about spiders, what was reinforced yesterday and what we learned! Today, instead of me leading their learning, I gave them books and in groups, they had to research-draw/write, what a spider looks like. We shared out and came up with lots of different species of spiders and ways that they look!
Today before reading, we journaled about all the things we thought we knew about spiders! They came up with a great list! We sang a fun song to "head shoulders knees and toes" about a spiders body parts! Hopefully they'll be able to pronounce and sing it to you tonight!
We read part of a level 2 reader book about spiders and learned that the venomous ones will inject their prey with poison and then use their salvia to turn them into goo and digest them! EW!
