In a cave of millions of bats, how do mother bats find their pups? They use scent and sound! So today we did a fun experiment where our mother bat tried to find her pup! Each kid had a cotton ball. On one cotton ball I put some vanilla extract. The "mom" had to sniff around (blindfolded) to find her pup by scent. They were squeaking too to make it a little more real! Because we know a colony of a million bats isn't quiet!

During writing workshop today, we worked on planning out our writing. When we think of our "small moment", what do we do with it? Today, we planned out how to write about a wedding we went to, and how we got our Halloween costume. We used our hands to help us plan out-what happened first, then, next, next and last. Both kids above used these methods to help tell their small moment and share out!
Also, while we were working, as you can see your child is engaged in writing too! We had lots of great small moments! Just wanted to show another example of what goes on during reading workshop! Today we worked on accuracy with a leveled book and retelling the story with a quick picture or word. We broke it up into 6 parts.
Answer: Echolocation
Today we did a fun experiment pretending to be bats and their food! Check out the pictures! Just another example of a reading groups! We work on many different things during reading: accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Today's group was working on comprehension. They have been reading AND REREADING the same book to work on characters, beginning, middle and end retellings. They are drawing and writing about it in their "language arts" books.
Yesterday we started talking about small moments or personal narratives. We read a fun book called The Night of the Veggie Monster, about a kid who does not want to eat vegetables at dinner! Sound familiar? We used that to connect to our own small moments. We learned that personal narratives are stories about ourselves.
So today, we had a great share-connected to yesterday's book and a great small moment captured in writing called, "The Night My Mom Made Salmon" :) I was cracking up as she read, but the class completely connected with her small moment! She did a good job writing each part of that night! Needless to say, salmon is not her favorite! |
