Today we reread one of my favorite stories: A Visitor for Bear. After we read, I gave 3 reasons why it was one of my favorite stories. I then used my 3 reasons to help me write my opinion. They also did the same today. They are still working on stating and restating their opinion. They tend to rush into the reasons instead of making sure that the reader or listener knows what they are talking about :).
When they were finished, they got to sit with a partner and share their opinion. Some even realized they chose the same story!!

Today we used another guided opinion sheet to help us organize our opinion writing. Today they were asked to come up with the best recess activity that they would recommend to a new student at SCE. They had to come up with 3 reasons to support their activity (opinion). They shared out their opinion writing on the document camera-which I LOVE! (and so do they)! It's a great way to show what other students are doing, to collaborate together to help edit or add to someone's work.
We are working on really being good with our conventions and taking our time to hear sounds in words as we are writing. We are also working on making sure we state and restate our opinion and not just list our reasons. Today we collaborated to identify shapes and then write and talk about defining attributes they had in common and what was different about them. They did a good job coming up with different commonalities and differences using key vocabulary.
Yesterday we started our geometry study. We talked about what makes a shape a shape. Today we created a chart talking about what defines a shape and what those attributes are! Lots of new vocabulary (attributes, vertices) and shape names! They also played a game where we found shapes in our room and they had to tell me why it was that shape-using our those defining attributes! We will work on sorting shapes tomorrow by different attributes!
Today during writing workshop we played "Would You Rather" and talked about the differences between facts and opinions.
I read a wordless picture book called Where's Walrus and Penguin and one student made a writing connection and made her own wordless picture book with penguin! The kids ooh'd and ahh'd during the whole thing! It was a really fun connection and share! |
