Today we started our work on persuasive letters. We discussed how it's exactly like an opinion, just in letter form. We also talked about how there's a lot to it: opinion, knowing how to write a letter and who the letter is for!! So today we decided we would only focus on the opinion piece (which we can do!) and the form of a letter!
Be warned: there are letters coming home to persuade you of something! If you could write back or answer their opinions that'd be great! They'd be so happy! And excited!
Today we did an experiment where we tried pretending to be a penguin with oily feathers. I had one hand without oil and one hand covered in cooking oil. They immersed their hands in the water and we observed what happened. Unfortunately we couldn't get everyone a turn-so tonight or this weekend they may ask to try! I said that if mom and dad have Vasoline or cooking oil-you can put that on your hands and run it under water and see what happens! Hope it's something you'd be willing to do at home!
Today in math they had to choose either a defining or non defining feature to pick which shape didn't fit. They did a good job supporting their choice and using key vocabulary!
Then they got a chance to play and build with shapes! Lots of really cool things were made and created! They also did a good job collaborating too! Today I challenged them with some more opener ended opinion writing. They had to pick 2 things they liked. Then they had to give reasons why they liked those things (i.e.. cupcakes vs. ice cream or puppies or kitties). After that, they had to choose one and write an opinion about why they liked that one.
We continued to talk about defining and non defining attributes of shapes. We did a mini lesson with shapes and a yarn circle where they had to guess my rule. Then others got to do their own!
Then they created their own guess my rule. The post it is the answer so they took turns and had other classmates try to guess what their rule was! Today we reallllly focused on remembering to state our opinion and then restate our opinion. I said it was like walking up to someone and just randomly saying, "Pepperoni and cheese are so good. It's warm and crunchy." People will be like, um, what are you talking about?! You have to give them information! So if I'm trying to convince my mom why pizza on a snowy night is a good idea, I can't just start talking at her! I have to let her know how I think and feel!
This helped really put it in perspective for them! We had some great opinion writing today! Check it out in their folders! This is the recipe from the book A Fine Dessert that we read today! It was really cool to see the inventions and life change throughout history! (the recipe was made in 1710, 1810, 1910 and 2010) and we followed those characters in their time period through the process of making the dessert! The kids loved it!
Today we built shapes using toothpicks, straws and marshmallows! They had a lot of fun using the defining attributes of shapes to create the 2D shapes! They also were able to, if they finished, to create other cool 3D shapes!
