Since Sparkles has been visiting, the kids are obsessed with her and elves. Elves only eat sugar as you know, so a kiddo decided to pretend to be an elf and relabeled her food to be "sugary treats" rather than the healthy stuff she had packed! I love her creativity!

Today we learned about how to write an opinion: what to include and the process. Using Oreos, we compared the layers to writing an opinion! I had a few stand up and share their opinions (French Onion soup, chili, bean soup and watermelon)! They used the first Oreo cookie to state their opinion. The cream center were our reasons/facts. Then the other cookie was to help us remind us to restate our opinion! Those that didn't get to share with the whole class, had to find someone to share their opinion with! They loved it! Plus we read a GREAT book called A Pig Parade is a Bad Idea to get us thinking about opinions!
Today we did our 3-2-1 Bridge after our study of whales! They did such a great job using new vocabulary words and really asking some thoughtful questions! Like why do they live in water when they can't breathe? Why are they SO BIG?! Why are sharks and whales so different but kind of the same? I was so proud of them! We took a moment and just stared at the wall and I heard, "WOW!" because yeah, wow! Look at all that!
Today they made Christmas countdown chains-but they had to do a lot work! They had to figure out first how many days until Christmas. Then they had to figure out a number sentence that equaled that day of the countdown! Then they had to write their equations on the chain and put the chain together! Whew! There was lots of thinking flexibly (we had some awesome number sentences), collaborating and creating! They loved it! Have fun counting down!
Our learning about writing opinions has been so great! We are going to be ready next week to try and start writing our own! Here is the list THEY came up with about what an opinion is, what habits of thinking we will use and specific words they heard in the picture books we read that will help us convey our opinion!
Today we started talking about the "communative property" aka "Fact Families". I put 3 numbers on the board and asked them, using only these 3 numbers write a number sentence. This student said they had an answer, so they got up and ended up not having one. She kept working through it, thinking, doing calculations and PERSEVERING through the problem till she came up with a correct solution! The kids immediately noticed her habit of thinking and cheered her on! We talked about how mathematicians make mistakes and how we just have to keep trying! It turned out to be a great mini lesson in my mini lesson :)! Way to go girl!
We've been working on a fun "game" where one partner writes a whole (number) at the top of the page, so "I spy the number 10". Then the other partner needs guess what equation they are thinking that matches that whole! They have really enjoyed playing this. They are working on their number sentences, facts 1-10 and higher and working with numbers to 20. Even some subtraction too depending on the pair!
Last night I got a phone call from one of Santa's elves asking if Sparkles, the elf, could come visit our class. I told Santa's elf, that we had a rough couple of days and I wasn't sure if they could handle it. So we talked about appropriate behavior (talk outs, showing respect by listening) and came to the conclusion that we think we could do it. So I am sending their elf applications to the North Pole today via fax :). The elves will run their fingerprints through and if they make the NICE list, Sparkles will come on Monday! I told them I'd find out tomorrow and let them know!!!
I love when students get ideas from books they've read! This student read Reading Makes You Feel Good and came up with her own list of why reading is great!! I LOVE LOVE HER LIST! She shared with the class and they agreed! Great list! Reading rocks! |
