Yesterday I gave them a tree with numbers on it. I asked them what they wanted to know about it. Overwhelmingly, they wanted to know the sum of all the numbers. We had so much good thinking, strategies, collaboration going on! And we didn't even finish! So today we are going to work on it again!
Also, we had some partners working together to subtract 10's on the 100's chart with a difference game!
Today we played a fun matching game with antonyms! They even came up with some on their own after the game!
Today we started our animal research using sticky notes! They did a great job looking for facts on their animal interest. We are going to do a large research project of their choosing, so this is designed to help scaffold their learning and research skills. We will continue to work on this. They are working on recording facts, using conventions (punctuation, lower case letters) and spelling words appropriately.
Yesterday, we played a quick game of min to win it, math style :) They had one min. to count out a specific number of tens in counters. We used this as a springboard to talk about how to count and do math. They told me that counting by one's was slow and sometimes they lost count. That they thought counting by 2's or 10's would make it easier. So then I put this picture of the gum up on the board. They had to figure out strategies to count the gum WITHOUT counting by one's. So then I gave them the picture to actually draw on and count, color!
We talked a lot about how it wasn't just the answer that was important but how you got there. Your thinking. Many came up to me with just a number and no thinking. If/when the answer was wrong, we couldn't talk about how they got there. It was also so neat to have them help each other when they got stuck! We are going to try to do lots more problems like this! Stay tuned! Our Market Day was a success! They were very creative with their goods and services ideas and had a lot of fun acting as consumers and producers! Some groups made commercials! They exchanged money for their goods and services. We had some group with business cards, we had open/close, sold out signs. There was a lot of great conversation going on! "Oh...if I buy that I'm out of money. I am not sure it's worth it." "If we lower our prices, we might get more customer."
I was throughly impressed with them!! They came up with some really creative and enticing concepts: movie theaters, face paint, pet store and candy store, grocery, ice cream shop, yo-yo making station, massage station and cookie sale! Afterwards, I asked them how they felt, what they thought about it, how it was connected to real world. It was fun hearing their thoughts and excitements from the day! Today their synonym assessment was to create an ice cream cone with synonyms. They had to come up with the words (their assessment) and create however many scoops they could for their word! They did a great job and loved his activity! A fun way to assess their learning!
We've wondering about yo-yo's for awhile now. How do you make them? What makes them work? We've had many different attempts by various students! I love seeing their thinking, trying new things, working with one another! It's awesome! Here's 3 examples of students ideas!
