Punctuation helps both readers and writers in telling and sharing their stories. The class is able to get their thoughts on paper so I think it's time to talk about punctuation. We will learn about: period, question marks, exclamation marks as well as commas, apostrophes and if anyone is ready; quotation marks. We will spend each day with a mini lesson visualizing looking about punctuation board, sorting sentences, looking at it in text, student work and then do some activities where they are applying their learning (formatively). I am hoping that we will see more punctuation in their writing after this concentrated study.
The picture above is the students sorting different sentences for our helpful board of punctuation.

This week we are starting something new during math workshop! It's called "Math Missions". If they choose to accept the mission, they will glue into their journals their math missions sheet to keep track of their missions.
At the beginning, I'm going to start with weekly missions but as we get more comfortable with the procedures, I will change the missions every couple of days. They are to choose a mission from the folder and solve it in their journal. They will have to show work, explain their thinking and understand that some problems may have more than one answer or way of doing things! They are excited to get started!! Every time they complete a whole card of missions, they will get a ticket and a certificate along with a public announcement that they finished!! |
