This topic spends time "making" numbers. This past week we explored making 6, 7 and 8. We used dot patterns (the dots like dice) to help us, as well as counters to show parts. I use the terminology: PART + PART = A WHOLE. We will use our hands to help us putting each hand together to show that those two parts equal a whole. Next week we will finish with making 9 and move right into making number sentences. The symbols are very important in math and I will stress that! We will also solve some story problems as well. We will spend all of next and a few days the following completing this topic. We are using the first few topics to practice routines, games and other parts of math workshop. I will pre assess each topic and work with my groups accordingly. It's important that we practice whole group to make sure we understand OUR "job" during this workshop time. What things we need to be working on and accomplishing, as well as the choices. They are doing a great job already! The first day it took us 45 min. to complete calendar, second day, it only took 20!!! I was so proud of how they were listening and catching on! In the next week, I will set up the online accompaniment to Pearson Success Net/Envision, so that you can go online and watch some learning videos as well as complete some math practice if you so wish.
