You may or may not have noticed that most of your child's writing does not have punctuation! As an adult, where editing and spelling drive me NUTS, this drives me NUTS! But, if you throw too many things at them at one time, they will misunderstand, misplace or just feel overwhelmed in their writing. Soooo now is the time! This week, we will talk a lot about punctuation. Why it's there, how it helps us as both a writer and especially as a reader. We will talk about periods, exclamation points and question marks. Now this will be an ongoing lesson, both whole group and in small group instruction during writing workshop. As I am working with students and groups, I will monitor how we are doing and if need be, we will do more whole group work. Mostly I see this working into when I meet with groups. So be on the look out for some wacky punctuation (periods at the end of every word, or every line or random !/? marks) at first and slowing moving into understanding the concept of how to end a thought. We will read some great books that are simple but really show the point (get it ha ha) of punctuation, like I Want My Hat Back, That's Not My Hat, ! (yup that's the title!), Pigs Make Me Sneeze and Should I Share My Ice Cream. For the first time this year, I will be sending homework home with this. Each day we will fill practice one of the sheets (it will be a little booklet). Then at home you will see that there is a spot for practicing. They will write their own sentence based on the directions at the top. Then send it back so they can do the practice sheet for the next day. You will only be responsible for the blank writing page sheet (I will write homework and the night to complete on it). PLEASE make sure you return it so that your child doesn't miss out on the next days practice. Just stick it in the return to school part of their folder each night :) Thanks for your help and support!
