Based on the pre-assessment I did today, we will do some reinforcement practice on topic 6. They did a GREAT job on the pre assessment and understood fact families, how to solve various subtraction problems. We will focus a bit more on how addition helps you solve subtraction and story problems. You may see some unfinished work mats go home but that does not mean that your child may have no completed them but I felt that we didn't need to do that based on the data I got from their pre assessment. Story problems are tricky because there are many different type of subtraction problems (take away, comparing and using addition (missing addends)) so high focus on the phrasing and how to figure out what type and how to solve it. They will continue to use their number lines, 100's charts and pictures to solve various problems.

This week we will being a nonfiction study about Reindeer (or Caribou as they are known in North America). Today we created our reindeer out of construction paper for our reindeer packet. We will study many different facts about reindeer, for example: both male and females have antlers, they are four-toed to help grip the ice and that's just to name a few we learned today! We will label a reindeer diagram, create a web of facts and list facts of what reindeer "can", "have" and "are". After we have collected our factual information, we will write what we know about reindeer in a guided narrative. Third trimester we will focus a lot on research writing so this will give them a head start! We will also write a fiction narrative about what they would do if they were a reindeer! At the end of our study we will write a "How-to" list for reindeer food. They will make their own bag of reindeer food to take home with them and sprinkle out before Santa comes! This is also the perfect time to have a conversation with your children about respecting others beliefs. It's a sensitive time of year so please remember to respect one another and how you chose to raise your children and families. I know that some do not do Santa or elves, but that being said, be aware that many children believe in Santa and elves so if you chose to do something differently, I ask that help guide your child into not saying anything to upset the other children and vice versa about other beliefs or traditions. Thank you for your help :) Our reading focus will be working with the hunk and chunk "ake". We will read books that help identify this hunk and chunk as well as doing many word work activities to help us decode them in both reading and writing. They will be working in small groups with their hot chocolate word parts (beginning letters to match with ending hunk and chunks). Our focus will be "ake" but they will also work with ending: ap, ame, ade, at and ale. On Monday we will work on making words and creating a list. On Tuesday we will add "ake" to our hunk and chunk chants as well as add new words we have created or thought of to our lists. The "ake" words we create will be hung up as well as placed on our word wall. They will also do word searches, sorts, write and circle and other word activities to help us with this chunk. See the homepage of the weebly for a list of what we have already created! This will also bring us into some discussion of compound words (cupcake, pancake)! Books we will read to help with our focus: If You Give a Cat a Cupcake Lucky Pennies and Hot Chocolate Digger the Dinosaur and the Cake Mistake Splat the Cat Takes the Cat If You Give a Pig a Pancake |
