Reading Strategies: 1. Look at the pictures. 2. Does it make sense? 3. Get your mouth ready. 4. Does it look right? 5. Does it sound right? 6. Reread. 7. Look for hunk and chunks. We added our final reading strategy today: Look for hunk and chunks. We talked about how we are going to start looking for hunks and chunks or words we know in other words. That we are going to move on from sounding out EVERY SINGLE letter. Doing that, doesn't make reading enjoyable. It makes our brain work too hard and then we either forget what we read or didn't like it. We are going to start looking for hunk and chunks and words within words that we know to help us decode words. We also had a long discussion about how the more we practice being readers and using these strategies, the easier reading will become. That reading is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. That using these strategies and practicing nightly, we help us become strong readers i.e. enjoying our books more! Because we get to read more interesting stories. Also, I have been having them come up and practice reading/using their strategies in front of their peers. They love to do this! We watch and identify what strategies they are using, as well as throw lots of compliments their way when they get a hard word! Some books that would be a great addition to your home library: Piggie and Gerald by Mo Willems. He writes with almost all sight/high frequency words. This is a great way for them to practice these words and add them to their bank! They are hilarious and the kids LOVE them! And because they are bigger/longer they feel more accomplished when they are reading them. Plus we will come back to these books when we start learning about how to read with expression/intonation when looking at punctuation.

Mrs. Woodmansee was kind enough today to come in and do a fun presentation on Snakes! She asked great true or false questions! She brought her class snake to visit: Mr. Greenjeans, a corn snake. We learned that snakes have skeletons (even though it doesn't seem like they do!), they are endangered (some species), they eat their food WHOLE and other fun facts! Each student got the choice of holding, petting or a no thank you and would you believe they all wanted to hold the snake!! They are super interested in snakes now so Mrs. Woodmansee left us a cool book to check out and I have a National Geographic Kids that we can check out too!
In order to prepare for our Skype visit with Chris Fischer, we created Great White sharks with fact bubbles. They did a good job recalling facts they had learned through their nonfiction reading, research and PebbleGo. Each student picked their fact and wrote using their BEST handwriting and letter sound/blend skills to write their facts. They had a little help from Miss Law but they turned out great! We even got some compliments from other teachers AND some big kids! We are starting to work on writing stories about ourselves. At t his age, we are consumed with what we do, who we play with, what we saw etc. So there are LOTS of great ideas for writing stores about ourselves! We talked about what a personal narrative means (a story about us) and using small moments in our lives to write them! We joked about how getting up and going to school is TOO small of a moment. And no offense, not that interesting. We also talked about how we aren't quite ready to write longer stories like a vacation. When we write, we talk about our steps: 1. Think 2. Plan and 3. Write We brainstormed lots of ideas that we could write about. From friends, to lost teeth, games we play etc. Then we talked about how to plan out our writing. We use our hands to help us count each part of the story: First, Next, then and last. I also have given them time to just write in their journals. They could write ideas, pictures or tell about a certain event. They LOVED it and worked very hard. They shared out and I think that helped give them ownership of their writing and being able to read it :) We are off to a great start! I've read some great books to help give them ideas too: How to Babysit a Grandpa, Every Friday, Big Sister, Little Sister, The Snowy Day and The Night of the Veggie Monster! |
