I gave them time this morning to play with cubes. They were allowed to do whatever, work wherever and build whatever they wanted to do! It was interesting to watch! At first, everyone was working individually. Then a few minutes later-almost everyone was working together (even the ones that were building separately) to build this class cube train. Each person had their own flare (some made patterns in it, some designed chairs, bins over the train. I loved asking them what they made and hearing their response. Check out the captions under the pictures to see! Lots of creativity and teamwork going on! We definitely Grow Thinkers!

Today I introduced "Read to Self" as part of our reading workshop routine. We talked and acted out the right and wrong way to go about this particular component! They had a blast pretending to be off task and not reading and did an AMAZING job reading when the time came!
I told them for every min. they could follow our "Read to Self" routines I would put a buckeye in, thinking they'd only be able to do it for 5-7 min. (thinking I could get in one DRA). They read for 18!!! So give your child some high praise when you see them tonight! Yesterday we read Rude Cakes which helped to remind us that no one likes a crumby rude cake! And how important manners and listening to adults is. They enjoyed their "rude cakes" and had fun imagining different scenarios. Today we read a great book: Lily Purple Plastic Purse. It's a great book, and funny to show how listening to adults and respecting them helps to make a fun classroom environment! In the book she shares cheese balls as a peace offering. So I brought in cheese balls for them!
Part of our math today was to practice various ways to show 5. At the end they got to cut out a watch to wear to remind them of our magic # 5! I bet I'm not the only one thinking..."It's 5 o'clock somewhere..." ha ha!
These are 2 GREAT, HILARIOUS AND SUPER FUN chapter books! Your kiddos LOVED IT! We read both. Might be worth checking out at the library and reading together at home. It's been great to spring board our "Imagining" thinking! If your kid asks for a banana and calls Mr. Nuggy-you know why! :) I had a kiddo yesterday who did that! So fun! I love that it gets their imagination running wild!
A kiddo brought in acorns they found this morning and wanted to count them! Without prompting, they got together and counted them, then sorted into groups. I walked over and asked some questions: "Why are they sorted that way?" "How many did you have all together?" It was a fun, random "real life" math situation!
