Today we finished the book The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me by one of my favorite authors Roald Dahl. In the story the little kid gets his own sweet shop! He has all these fun candies from all over the world! They have the coolest names and do the coolest stuff. So we took some time to think and talk: What if? What if we had our own sweet shop? What if we could make up any candy we wanted? What would happen? (a lot of funny chaos for sure!) Here are their candies! Ask when you get a chance! (I forgot my paper at school that had all the names and what happened when you ate their candy so I'll add it tomorrow AM)! They had a blast imaging all this new candy!
We read a great book today called Iggy Peck, Architect! Iggy loves to build, make and design things but when we goes to 2nd grade, his teacher has different ideas of what to do with his time. He ends up saving the day designing a bridge and his teacher changes her mind about creativity/building in 2nd grade!
This book is PERFECT! I LOVE IT! It's rhyming, funny and it has some great lessons embedded in there! We talked about creativity, THEIR interests drive their learning and collaborating (teamwork). They had so much fun and it was so cool to see what they came up with!
Just wanted to share! We played some games today-Sharks and Minnows and whatever this hand game is? I'm sure there is an official name and they had it down! (Way down yonder by the…and Pepsi Cola).
They had a blast! It was the perfect opportunity after reading Recess Queen and reviewing our "Peacemakers" and "Peacebreakers" to talk about cheating, playing fair, following rules, listening and working together towards fun!!
As in reading, today we started our introduction to math workshop. Our opener was dot patterns and they had to show me what they saw. The cool thing is they get to get u and teach each other! We had all sorts of strategies: tally marks, pictures, dot patterns, number sentences, parts and whole. During our work time, we used our tool: cubes to show the dot pattern and share.
While they shared, I recorded their thinking on the board/dry erase board. I will post next to our tools different ways to show our work for them as a reference!
