After we read the Very Hungry Caterpillar today, we talked about how much did this guy really eat?! They came up with some different tools and strategies they would need to solve it.
I reread the book, and they used whatever strategy/tool they felt comfortable using. During our share/reflect time, we noticed that some of our thinking wasn't very organized. And that it was hard for us to figure out what our work told us. So today we will hit this problem up again! Our focus will be to find a way to organize our thinking and be able to put that in our notebooks so that we can share!

Today we did a 3 act task for math. I showed them a video of a birthday cake being lit. They had to see, think and wonder about it. We then (with a little steering) wondered how many candles were on the cake? What birthday is it for Rodney?
I showed them how many blue candles and how many yellow. They worked independently at first using any strategy they wanted. Then they were able to collaborate and work/talk math with others. We had lots of great strategies to share and talk about! We also used our math journals today for the 1st time! This picture was AWESOME for our See-Think-Wonder routine! So many great observations, thinking and questions!
I challenged the kids to ask YOU guys to see, think and wonder with them this weekend! I read the book "Going Places" to kick off a discussion about thinking flexibly! I used spaghetti and a rubber band to talk about the difference of being inflexible and flexible! One kid said, "If you cook the spaghetti-it will be flexible."!
They worked in teams to create a bridge that their Lego person could walk over! Everyone go to walk, share and discuss their strategies! This afternoon we worked on another thinking habit: collaborating. What does it look like? How can we do it? They started out in groups of 4. They tried to keep their balloon afloat only using straws-using their air! No hands! Then I combined groups until we had the whole class trying to keep the balloon up!
They decided that having more people and working together was way easier than doing it on their own! Small group was ok, but it was even better when they all tried! Today we read The Most Magnificent Thing. The girl in the story perseveres through to create something. She gets frustrated, upset and wants to quit! We talked about the word "persevere" and what that means. We also came up with a handy chart to use when we are feeling frustrated!
We had a fun 1st day! We explored our room, flexible seating options, read lots of books and worked with our friends!
