Yesterday we kicked off our landform study by doing a See-Think-Wonder thinking routine. Students looked at the picture for 2 min. then shared what they were thinking, seeing and wondering!
Today was a bit random, as is almost all day with kids. :) We had a harmonica share which lead to questions about instruments (old ones they said) and so that lead to some folk music which lead to Mumford and Sons. :) Yes, I know. But I swear it naturally led there! I am a bit bias, b/c I love them so I did guide that thinking a little!
Mumford and Sons led to collaborating (they have a new AMAZING song) and a thinking flexibly conversation. The class was jamming and LOVED IT! They were really into the 5th grade musical (which was The Jungle Book-an African theme) So they loved this collaboration of Mumford! They suggested we listen to them while they worked ha ha! So sorry, I'm creating little Folk/Alt Rock fans out of your children! :) THEN this led to TONS of kids making instruments for their own band! Yesterday they were ALL about the blueprints, models and engineering and today it's music and a band! Today we created: -instruments (with 2 band performances) -tooth necklaces -houses -attempted at making a rubics cube -space ships -played with puppets -an airplance -art work -Earring Shop Yesterday we started another 3 act task. We want to know how many little tomato bottles go in the big bottle. They really struggled with this, but it was cool to see them preserve and collaborate with one another. I eventually gave them a hint. And then we worked through it together after 40 min. of trying :) They will be wearing their "preserve" and thinking flexibly today!! So proud!
I had Mr. Graham find the blueprints for SCE for a creative project for me. I'm attempting to redesign my room into a more flexible classroom next year. And when he brought them in-they were soooo excited! ha ha! They loved looking at the blueprints, asking questions (I started writing down what they asked to talk about-it was so cool to hear their thinking). They counted different lights, classrooms and other things! They also are now inspired to create a model out of it ha ha! Who would have thought they would be that interested in a blueprint!
I have a group of them taking pictures of everything in the school (inside/outside) to help with their own blueprint and model! It was so nice to look up and see this! It's been pretty bananas in here this week :) Lots of talking and forgetting our routines :) but we'll get through it! Today when I was assessing DRA's they were entranced in their books! :) Way to turn it around!
