In word study we are going to work with "ed". We will probably work with this for a few weeks. Our chant helps to remind us that "ed" ed means past tense for verbs and can make two sounds: ed-d or ed-t sound. We also will work with "ed" in the middle of words (bed, led) and it's sound and how it makes a different sound. The class came up with their word list by brainstorming together! Since we studied verbs and past tense last week they did a super job!

In science we are moving on to energy. We will talk and read about how energy makes things work (electricity, light, water, batteries and wind). There is a lot of new vocabulary like motion, so we will do some more dancing and chanting to help them remember! :) We will also talk about how to conserve energy and brainstorm some creative ways to do that! They will draw and write about how they as kids can help save energy! We have some fun activities that go along with this, like giving them a car, clay, toothpicks and paper and they have to make the car move with those materials and figure out a way to make it go? (wind energy!) They go by lots of names but sight words are the words we want kids to know in K-2 that they see frequently in both reading and writing. We will do a lot of studying of these words during reading workshop. We will talk about how these words are "snap" words (same snap words we use in writing!!! so they already kind of know this) and that when we read, we just have to know them. Sounding out and other techniques may not work with these words, so the more practice we do, the better we will get! The list is still in the resources section of the weebly, so check it out. I can also send home the list at anytime via email/paper copy so just let me know! We have some fun games to play (race, bingo) to help us remember them! They have been doing such a great job writing their Valentine's. We have been working on all aspects of conventions (capitals, periods and neatness) and editing (going back to check for errors) and spelling. They came up with a list of Valentine's words that we posted as well as a list of compliments to help them write! They are on a roll and I'm hoping next week we can spend a few days decorating with all the awesome things you guys sent in! (THANK YOU!) So look forward to reading some really great cards next week! Topic 10 is dealing with adding groups of tens and then eventually adding groups of tens and ones. We start out easy adding groups of ten. We will use green sticks (groups of 10) and ones to help visualize and physically move and add together. This is a rather long topic and again, difficult but with practice and more practice in second grade they will get a better handle on it. Any extra practice at home will help. We draw groups of 10's as long sticks (french fries) and ones as small boxes/squares, tater tots. Paper, dry erase board, however you want to add, making sure they write the number sentence out. This subject brings a lot of new vocabulary, so of course why not learn a chant/song to help you remember it! They loved singing and moving to help them remember their new vocabulary: motion-When something is moving. force-makes something move, stop or change direction. speed-describes how fast or slow something moves. pull-moves an object closer push-moves an object away. We also looked a lots of pictures, videos of objects and how they move (circular, curved, straight and zig zag) and talked a lot about speed. That speed can describe how fast OR slow something moves-it doesn't have to be fast! We assessed this topic today! |
